The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) is an intensely dry, warm, and sometimes dust-laden layer of the atmosphere which often overlies the cooler, more-humid surface air of the Atlantic Ocean. In the Sahara Desert region of North Africa, where it originates, it is the prevalent atmosphere, extending from the surface upwards several kilometers. As it drives, or is driven, out over the ocean, it is lifted above the denser marine air. During the hurricane season, this layer is one of the factors that reduce convection of new tropical waves that have just come out of Africa and thus inhibit tropical development.
La capa de aire del Sahara es una capa intensamente seca, cálida y a veces cargado de polvo de la atmósfera, que a menudo se superpone al aire superficial más frío-húmedo del Océano Atlántico.
