HURRICANE SEASON 2020

Monthly areas of origin and tracks:

There are certain factors that will be critical for the outcome of this season, please take note of the following.

CRITICAL FACTORS FOR THIS HURRICANE SEASON

Oceanic heat content

Factor 1

There is enough oceanic heat content (energy for tropical cyclones) at the surface of the ocean mostly over the western half of the Caribbean, parts of the Gulf of Mexico, some other areas of the Caribbean and to the east of the Caribbean. This favors the development of tropical cyclones. The warmup is also expected to continue during the coming months (adding more oceanic heat content) as a warm phase of the AMO (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation) is forecasted during the season and that enhances warmer than average sea surface temperatures over the Atlantic basin.

Warm sea temperatures

Factor 2

The above average sea surface temperatures across the whole Atlantic basin including the subtropical area of the Atlantic as well as the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. Warm sea surface temperatures feed tropical cyclones and provide these with fuel to develop and strengthen.
